Carving with alternate views: 3/4 and lit versions.
First pumpkin of 2007. Also submitted for joystiq.com carving contest (although I was halfway done when I found out about it).
I get asked a lot of questions so I'll try to address it here.
Used: Pen knives, pocket knives, wood carving tools, exacto, and tried sand paper for touch up (didn't help much btw).
Time: 8 hours, not including planning stage.
Prior experience?: For carving pumpkins in the round like this, I suggest taking sculpting and trying your hand at modeling heads. I had done 2 other pumpkins in this manner prior to this one. A big inspiration to me was Pumpkingutter.com <--- check it out.
What I do to protect my pumpkins: I store it in a cool place like a refrigerator when possible. I keep it from drying out by (1.) not gutting out the pumpkins innards until ready for lighting / presenting, (2.) add wads of soaked newspaper inside, (3.) wrap a wet towel / newspaper around the carved surface, and (4.) place in an airtight trash bag. To avoid mold, I check up on the pumpkin once in a while and dab rubbing alcohol on the exposed surfaces.
